Field Trip to Intel

This page is for our intel trip that was the shortest and most interesting trip we took in the school year 2013-2014.In thhis trip we went to the intel museum where we found out all about intel and what they did there. We found out that they made micro processors or these small computer chip that are put into most of our laptops that we use. These micro processors are made up of transistors or on/off switches. This was interesting because in 1986, when it first started, not many transistors could fit on a chip. Only 2,300 transistors could fit on a chip that was the size of your thumbnail. But now there are more than 2 billion transistors on that same size chip.

These transistors are so small that it would take 1 transistor to equal the width of a yeast. Also in the chips are so fast that in 1 nanosecond it turns on and off. An example of a nanosecond is that a nanosecond is 1 billionth of a second. Which is way to fast for us humans to do and we tested this with a exhibit that they made to show this. In that exhibit it had two sensors about 11 inches apart and you had to swipe your hand right over the sensors and it would give you a reading of your speed in nanoseconds. For our group the fastest speed was about 14 million nanoseconds (and they were all trying).

Below are some pictures from the trip starting with a picture of me(right) and my friend Thai(left).

Here is a picture of how the chip evolved after time.

Here is a picture of the silicon that is used to make the wafers for the chips.
